Kraft) Photo taken 6/20/00, during the presentation of the Andrew M. Weist Award for Operation and Maintenance Excellence Award for the operation of the wastewater treatment plant.

A sizable number of DEC officials gathered at the presentation ceremony and the wife and daughters of Andrew M. Weist. This is the first year the award was presented. In presenting the award, Mr. Kaul commented that seeing the camping site next to the WWTP said it all. Mayor Kraft said that he always knew the plant was well run and he was proud to accept the award for the village! Good job!

Press Release from NYS DEC: New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 4 Director Steve Schassler announced today that the Montgomery County village of St. Johnsville received an Andrew M. Weist Operation & Maintenance Award for the operation of their wastewater treatment plant.

The Andrew M. Weist O & M Excellence Awards recognize wastewater treatment facilities that implement innovative and outstanding operations, maintenance and management programs that result in high levels of continued performance and efficiency.

"Municipal wastewater treatment facilities are the backbone of New York State's water quality protection efforts. These awards recognize municipalities that have demonstrated outstanding efforts to protect water quality," Schassler said. "This award also recognizes the wastewater treatment facility staff for their find work and dedication to protecting public health, the environment, and the public's investment."

Winners were selected in categories based upon their size and degree of wastewater treatment they provide. Facilities eligible for one of the small category awards process less than one million gallons of wastewater per day: those in the medium category process one million to 10 million gallons per day: and those in the large category process more than 10 million gallons per day. Two awards are given for each category, depending on the amount of treatment provided for the wastewater: either secondary or advanced. The St. Johnsville plant received their award in the medium facility category, providing secondary treatment.

The award memorializes Andrew M. Weist for his numerous contributions that have enhanced wastewater treatment plant operations in New York and throughout the country. Andrew was the section chief of DEC's Facility Operations Assistance Section for 15 years, and worked with DEC for more than 32 years before retiring in 1995. Andy's efforts played a significant role in improving the quality of New York's waters. Andrew passed away last year.

A committee of DEC Division of Water staff judges selected winning facilities based upon their outstanding wastewater treatment performance, innovation and management efforts that resulted in high levels of regulatory compliance. Any publicly owned wastewater treatment plant in New York State is eligible to be considered for the O & M Excellence Awards Program.
